CYBER ATTACK on client

ATTENTION all clients. Please be on high alert – below is an email trail of an attempted cyber attack on one of our clients last week. Luckily our client followed our cyber alert instructions and double checked before transferring finds into a rogue account.

The email trail shows the hackers pretend to be our property lawyer Daniel Moisander asking for a payment due into our trust account. They even bothered to lift part of our logo from somewhere online.

(personal information of client has been removed)

On Wed 30 June our client received the following:

Hi ,

Hope this email finds you well.

In view of unconditional date and building and pest inspection, I advise you start attending to an EFT payment of the balance deposit funds to our trust account to reserve your legal right to the property and in conformity with our firm's applicable rules. I will remit the receipt to you and the agent once the funds hit our account.

Time to remain of the essence.

NOTE: Your deposit is fully refundable if you decide to pull out of the contract.

With this kindly confirm you are willing to pay the deposit and i will forward our trust account details for the transfer

Thanks,
Kind Regards

Hi Daniel

Guessing this isn’t you !!??
Kindest Regards

What can you do to make sure you don't fall victim to these particularly sophisticated hackers?

The team at SPM Law complete cyber security training through Lexon every year and we are always on the lookout for threats. This is an example of how sophisticated the hacking has become and that even though we are a regional law firm our clients can still be susceptible and that they aren’t just hitting the larger city firms.

Please do not act on any communication (from us, or anyone else) that requires you to send deposit, pay or transfer funds – until you

1. Check the phone number of the apparent sender of the communication – use a source other than the communication that asks for money;
2. Contact the apparent sender by phone
3. Read out and read back the account and BSB numbers contained in the communication; and
4. Confirm any instructions.

Please don't hesitate to contact our team on 07 5440 4800 if you have any questions.
