Helping with the BIG little things

Coast2Bay Housing Group is a not-for-profit company committed to providing affordable safe and appropriate homes to individuals and families throughout the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Moreton Bay, Redcliffe and Gympie regions.  SPM Director Michael Sobey was on the board of the company for 9 years and only recently stepped down.  Michael has been providing support through pro-bono legal advice for close to 11years and it is an organisation that the firm will continue to support for years to come as it provides a vital service to at risk members of the local community.

Coast2Bay run a variety of projects helping many people managing approximately 470 community housing dwellings within the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions.

The most recently completed of these is the RISE project which fully funded the building of two short-term emergency accommodation facilities for women and children escaping domestic violence. These are based at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.   Once families are stable and able to manage their circumstances they are then assisted to transition to community or market housing to re-start their lives.  SPM Law is very proud to have provided the legal services for the conveyance of the land at no cost to Coast2 Bay.  In our work with Family Law we often see the unfortunate and desperate need for these types of services.

Another project is the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS), a government program that aims to develop a sustainable solution to the housing shortage by assisting investors who are prepared to build affordable rental housing. Coast2Bay are a proud not for profit partner of the NRAS.

We would like to share a recent case study of a family that has had direct assistance from NRAS through Coast2Bay;

Daniel and Sofia moved to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney in 2015 after finding out they were expecting their first child. They started out their time on the Sunshine Coast renting a small second floor unit, which had started to be a challenge once their baby boy, Luca, became more active. Sofia is a devoted stay-at-home mum, and she has a permanent disability, (she suffered a severe stroke in 2008 which left her with significant paralysis). So, as you could imagine raising a child with such a condition brings with it a lot of special needs that Daniel and Sofia need to account for in finding a suitable rental property. Searching for a house with no stairs and a flat backyard, somewhere that was closer to Daniel’s work, a daycare and most importantly closer to their other family members, was something that they had really been struggling with. They were already spending 100% of Daniel’s wage just by getting and affording what was on offer. In May 2017 they found the perfect house advertised by Coast2Bay Housing Group under the NRAS scheme, and that same month they moved into their new home. Luca is thriving in his new backyard and his parents have great joy in watching him explore it.
“We are very grateful to the Coast2Bay Housing Group team and for the amazing support we have received from you. Thanks so much for helping us to find our perfect home!”
Daniel, Sofia and Luca

We encourage you to support the initiatives of Coast2Bay when you can including their latest, Purpose Real Estate a property management social enterprise. Profits from the organisation will be funnelled back to other Coast2Bay projects.
