Ben Blackaby

Ben originates from the UK where he worked as a Senior Associate with Bird & Bird LLP in London until 2013.  Moving to Queensland in 2014, Ben worked as a Senior Associate for a large international firm in Brisbane before moving to the Sunshine Coast and in 2018 became a welcome addition to the SPM Law Commercial team.

Ben has extensive experience in commercial leasing, the sale and purchase of commercial properties, property finance and property related issues encountered in corporate recovery and restructuring.

In his down time, Ben enjoys keeping fit and has been known to take part in events such as Tough Mudder, The Nuts Challenge and half marathons. I’m sure the Noosa Triathlon will be on his radar.  The only thing that might get in the way of this is his role as coach/manager of his daughter’s soccer (sorry, football) career. Although still a toddler, Ben is convinced her natural talents and his coaching abilities will have her playing for England one day!

COVID -19 Lease Legislation Summary

RETAIL SHOP LEASES AND OTHER COMMERCIAL LEASES (COVID-19 EMERGENCY RESPONSE) REGULATION 2020 (QLD)2020 - SUMMARY OF LEGISLATION Initial Comments On 28 May 2020, the Retail Shop Leases and Other Commercial Leases (COVID-19 Emergency Response) Regulation 2020 (Qld) (“the Regulation”) was introduced into Queensland law. Taking a few weeks longer than anticipated, the Regulation went beyond what was expected, or at least what was noted by the Mandatory Code of Conduct. The Regulation has a very tenant favoured basis, and grants some significant powers, even going as far to provide avenues for landlords and tenants to be ordered to pay compensation by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (“QCAT”) if their conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic in negotiating rent is deemed unconscionable or is not in good faith.
